ZINFANDEL
ADVOCATES &
PRODUCERS
It's no exaggeration to describe Dr.
Jerry Seps as a Zinfandel specialist. In
1976, he, along with wife Sigrid, purchased
a remote and long-abandoned
vineyard property in the upper reaches
of the Napa Valley calling it Storybook
Mountain Vineyards.
at was the same year California
wines made world headlines when they
beat the French in the now-famous
Paris tasting. Cabernet Sauvignon
seemed like the surefire ticket to red
wine stardom for anyone just starting
out with a new vineyard.
Why plant Zinfandel?
e Seps wanted to grow distinctive
grapes that would produce world-class
wines. But at the same time they wanted
to chart their own course, not just follow
the crowd.Mindful of history, they knew
their property had produced excellent
Zinfandel in the 1880s.ey evaluated
as many factors as they could including
soil, topography and climate conditions.
Ultimately they followed André
Tchelistcheff' advice that the red clay
soils above Calistoga were the best area
in the Napa Valley, to grow Zinfandel.
In 1983 they released their first
Zinfandel.e initial 1981 vintage won
a Gold medal, the first in what would
become a long stream of awards.e
results are always in the pudding as Dr.
Seps explained, "n the right spot, in the
right hands, Zinfandel can be as fine a
wine as any produced in the world."As all good Zappers know, Zinfandel
has many appealing characteristics; a
rich berry, sometimes jammy, fruitiness,
a spicy profile and sometimes a deep
reservoir of brooding power. But in
Dr. Seps'opinion the attribute that is
sometimes overlooked is elegance creating
a sense of balance that captures the
fruit while harnessing the power. He
believes in the concept of "olishing the
diamond"creating nuanced wines artfully
revealing multi-faceted layers of light
and brilliance.
Dr. Seps believes in producing wines
offering intense fruit without being either
too heavy or overly alcoholic, tilting towards
balance and elegance. He prefers
wines with slightly higher acidity, moderate
pH levels and alcohol levels in the mid
14-teens.at is his key to drinkability
but it' also the secret code to ageability.
"t' important the wine doesn' overwhelm,
but instead informs as a companion
for food,"says Dr. Seps. Longevity is
an added bonus. Dr. Seps still loves to tap
into his remaining stock of that initial '1
vintage, pleased with how well it' holding
up.
ZAP is extremely pleased to introduce
Rod Byers as a contributing writer to our
newsletter. Rod is a certified wine educator
and has been writing about wine for
almost 20 years. His extensive background
includes teaching wine classes and posting
a wine column to
e Union
newspaper
e 2006
HeritageVineyard By Rod Byers
Jerry Seps of Storybook Mountain Vineyards in Calistoga,
a ZAP founding father and president for the first five years,

from The Phase 1 Vineyard.
