A Little Bit of HistoryYazoo Brewing began as just a dream, stoked by years of homebrewing in the basement. Linus and Lila Hall moved to Nashville from Mississippi in 1996, with Linus going to work as a tire engineer for Bridgestone and Lila as a curator for the Parthenon. Trying to make tires more round proved to be less fulfilling than making great beer, so with the encouragement of Lila, Linus quit his job, got a business degree from Vanderbilt and a craft-brewing education through a course at the American Brewer's Guild, and did an internship under Garrett Oliver at Brooklyn Brewery. Linus found a used 10 bbl brewing system from a brewpub in Iowa that had gone out of business, and went to work restoring a corner of the old Marathon Motorworks building for their brewery. Yazoo Brewing opened for business in Oct 2003, and quickly gained an enthusiastic local following. After six years, we had outgrown our leased space, and decided to move a short way down the road to a bigger building in the Gulch, at 910 Division Street. With a new 40 bbl brewhouse, and plenty of space to add more tanks, we're excited about being able to spread the good beer across the rest of the Southeast! We're a tight crew at Yazoo. Sometimes it amazes even us how much beer we brew with just seven people in the brewery and five in the taproom. Yazoo Taproom HoursThe Yazoo Brewery Taproom is open every Wednesday 4-6 (Growler fills only), Thursday 4-8pm, Friday 4-8pm, and Saturday 2-8pm.
Brewery tours are only Saturdays starting @ 2:30 and they are every hour until 6:30 with cost being $6. You'll get to walk through all parts of the brewery and learn how our beers are made. With your admission you'll also receive a complimentary Yazoo pint glass and samples of our beers during the tour.
Yazoo Dos PerrosMany Mexican beer styles today are descendants of old Austrian styles, from when Austria ruled Mexico in the late 19th century. Our Dos Perros is made with German Munich malt, English Pale malt, and Chocolate malt, and hopped with Perle and Saaz hops. To lighten the body, as many Mexican brewers do, we add a small portion of flaked maize. The result is a wonderfully bready malt aroma, balanced with some maize sweetness and a noble hop finish. Food PairingsThe toasty malt flavors go great with barbeque, grilled salmon, carmelized onions, and most hot and spicy foods. Try it with Mexican or Thai dishes. Beer Stats

Yazoo Pale AleA new version of an American classic. Our Yazoo Pale Ale bursts with spicy, citrusy hop aroma and flavor, coming from the newly discovered Amarillo hop. The wonderful hop aroma is balanced nicely with a toasty malt body, ending with a cleansing hop finish. Made with English Pale, Munich, Vienna, and Crystal malts, and generously hopped with Amarillo, Perle, and Cascade hops. Fermented with our English ale yeast. Food PairingsThe bracing bitterness of this beer can hold its own with spicy foods, while helping to cleanse the palate after rich, creamy dishes. The citrus hop flavors go exceptionally well with any dishes using cilantro, such as Mexican salsas. Beer Stats

Yazoo HefeweizenAn authentic example of a Bavarian Hefeweizen. "Hefe" means cloudy or yeasty and "weizen" means wheat. This beer is made with mostly wheat and uses a true Hefeweizen yeast that gives it a fruity, banana aroma with just a hint of cloves. The tart finish makes this the perfect summer beer. Food PairingsAlmost anything goes well with Hefeweizen, but it especially shines when paired with salads and omelets. Beer Stats

Yazoo Sly Rye PorterA rich, chocolaty English Porter with a clean finish. We use the finest floor-malted Maris Otter malts from England, the same malts used for the best single-malt scotch. A portion of malted rye gives a spicy, slightly dry finish. Food PairingsThe rich, chocolate notes pair well with the carmelized surface of steaks, pork tenderloins and lamb, but save this beer for dessert if you're having chocolate or crème brulée. Yazoo StoutThe tan lace clings to the glass as you raise the pint to your lips. Close your eyes and smile as the rich espresso notes fade to a dry, roasted finish. Exceptionally smooth and satisfying. Made with English Pale malt, roasted barley, black patent malt, and flaked barley. Hopped with East Kent Goldings and Target hops, and fermented with our English ale yeast. Food PairingsThe combination of Onward Stout and oysters is a match made in heaven. It also goes well with other shellfish, grilled steaks, and believe it or not, rich chocolate desserts. Carbonade Flamande, seared beef cubes simmered in Stout for several hours, is a classic Belgian dish. Beer Stats

Yazoo Hop ProjectThis brew is an India Pale Ale by style, but that is where the similarity to most IPAs ends. Each consecutive batch of Hop Project is brewed with a different blend of spicy, aromatic hops, never using the same blend twice. It's a Hophead's dream come true! Check the bottled on date and our blog to decode what specific hop varieties we used in that batch.
Yazoo Hop ProjectThe south is famous for smoking everything. Why not beer? Sue is a big, rich, smoky malt bomb of a beer, with mellow smokiness coming from barley malts smoked with cherry wood, and assertive bitterness from Galena and Perle hops to cleanse the finish.
Yazoo Hop ProjectJust like the seasons, the direction and creativity of our brewers changes throughout the year. Each season, we brew a beer that we feel best captures that time of the year.
