Okay, so it's easy to turn cool design in Canada's wine industry into a
bad pun. But the truth is that the Canadians, blessed with a clean slate and gorgeous vistas,

have put a lot of effort into the design of many of their wineries.

Of course, great winery design is not a prerequisite for great wine. It really has no influence

on the wine, but it does have an influence on an emerging wine tourism industry.

While this may seem trite to some, the fact of the matter remains that feet on the ground for

wineries can be as important as eyeballs for a website. We all need to attract a larger audience

and help to create brand evangelists! Great design not only allows for impressive displays, but

also creates the spaces needed for impressive events. Check out these five hot - I mean, cool -

wineries and begin planning for visits!

Food & Wine's 100 Wines

Top picks from each category

Ray Isle at Food & Wine Magazine has come up with a list of 100 wines to try right now and I

thought I'd take a run through the list and see where Ray and I agree, and if we disagree.

With 12 categories of wines to choose from, there were certainly a lot of wines to run through,

not to mention a wine for every palate - and pocketbook. Ray has put together a solid list.

Though there were some wines I personally would avoid, there was a definite winner in every

category. Check out my favorites!

2009 Dry Creek Vineyard Clarksburg Dry Chenin Blanc

Food & Wine's Amazing Value Wines

I've been enjoying Dry Creek Vineyard's fresh Chenin for years. It's a summer staple for me and

even my wine geek friends. A great choice for geek and novice alike. We're off to a great start.

2001 Château Cos D'Estournel

Food & Wine's Smart Wine Splurges

I almost don't want to mention the 2001 Cos, again! This is world class Bordeaux and my

favorite vintage of Cos from the past two decades. Killer juice and while it's expensive, it is

a relative value.

2008 Abbazia di Novacella Kerner

Food & Wine's Sommelier Favorites

Geek alert! I'm talking about Kerner again. Yes, this is another white, obscure or not, from the

Alto-Adige that I like to go on about. And while Kerner can be a powerful wine at its best (like

when it's grown at altitude outside Bressanone at the Abbey of Novacella), it's wonderfully

round with hints of nutmeg and spice that sets off its rich core of fruit. Yes, I like.

2007 Herdade do Esporão Reserva Red

Food & Wine's Next Great Wine Regions

Okay, Ray lost me a little here. I was expecting Michigan, India, maybe Brazil here; but then

again I am a wine geek. If there's any region I believe should be the next great thing, I would

have to nominate Portugal for its great reds and super values! And about that Ribera Sacra,

there's not enough to go around so let's keep that under wraps, shall we?

2007 Henri Milan Le Grand Blanc

Food & Wine's Best Wine Trends

While I can think of other natural wines I might reach for first, there is no doubt that the explosive

growth of naturally made wine is the most exciting trend in play today. I hate to call it a trend and

believe that it is a movement that will continue to bring more diversity to the wine world, while

making our planet a better, happier place to live!

2009 Raptor Ridge Winery Pinot Gris

Food & Wine's Do-Good Wines

This list of wines that contribute to a worthy cause was a bit difficult to reduce to a single choice,

seeing as all the wines and causes were worthy of discussion. I ended up choosing the Raptor

Ridge Pinot Gris not only because it's a good wine, but because of the cause it supports: ¡Salud!,

a business that relies upon, and often ignores, seasonal workers. Oregon's ¡Salud! Organization

helps to care for these important people by providing them with health care. See how you can support ¡Salud!

2008 Fratelli Alessandria Verduno Pelaverga

Food & Wine's Geek Wines

As a bit of an uber-geek, this list seems a bit tame to me. Where's the Blaterle and Txakoli?

But then again it did also include Puffeney's Arbois Savignin, so kudos are in order. I settled on

the Pelaverga since it's a wine I drink fairly frequently. Verduno might very well be my favorite

town in Piedmont, so you might also call this my sentimental pick!

2009 Buitenverwachting Sauvignon Blanc

Food & Wine's Vintages to Buy Today

This list struck me as the weak spot in Food & Wine's Top 100 list. The wines were generally current

release wines, and while many come from great vintages, there wasn't much to be learned here. I

have been a fan of the Buitenverwachting Sauvignon Blanc for years, so picking up another 6-pack

for this summer's enjoyment is a no-brainer. It's great juice!

2008 La Follette Van der Kamp Vineyard Pinot Noir

Food & Wine's Star Winemakers' Newest Projects

This was a tough choice. Should I have opted for Pax Mahle's Windgap Chardonnay? In the end

I decided against it, though if it had been the Syrah, Grenache or Pinot Gris, I would have had to

go with Pax. But Greg LaFolette's new line of wines really sung when I tried them recently and

the Van der Kamp stood out among a standout lineup, so make sure to try and find this beautiful

Pinot Noir!

2008 Hirsch Grüner #1

Food & Wine's Special-Occasion Wines

This was another tough lineup to whittle down to a single choice. I really wanted to go with the

Dönnhoff Riesling Grosses Gewächs, but once I factored in the price, the rarity and the unique

nature of that wine, I had to opt for the Hirsch (though I think it might have been better placed

in the next list). Still, it's a great Grüner and one that is perfect for summertime vegetable

dishes, as Ray mentions. While it may seem weird to find this wine in a list of special occasion

wines, I'm going with the idea that enjoying seasonal produce at its peak is always a special

occasion!

2009 Domaine Sigalas Santorini

Food & Wine's International Wine Varieties to Know

I'm looking forward to learning more about Greek wines this year. And an upcoming trip to

Santorini has me on the research trail, so a fine Assyrtiko seems like the perfect wine to alert

people about. Crisp, elegant and minerally, Assyrtiko can be found throughout Greece, but

Santorini's terroir produces something unique and special. A wine you really have to try.

2006 Chateau d'Issan

Food & Wine's Wine Comeback Cases

Tough to get to 100, was it? This list, as good as it is, seems a bit of a hodgepodge; but at

least there was a wine from a previous vintage at a reasonable price on it. Ray included the

d'Issan based on its recent quality improvements and credits Emmanuel Cruse. I included

it because it's a fine Bordeaux from a somewhat overshadowed vintage that still says Bordeaux

to me. A delicious rarity today!
