Azana Vineyard Tour

Our Vineyards

Azana Vineyard

Azana Vineyard

In spring 2008 we planted our first estate vineyard - a spectacular little 10-acre parcel in the

Chehalem Mountains AVA. (It's adjacent to Adelsheim's Bryan Creek vineyard.) The vineyard

is named "Azana", after the granddaughter of our partner, Cameron Healy.

It sits high on the steep south slope of the mountain at about 750 feet - facing due south,

with a commanding view of the entire valley. The soil is 100% Jory - the same volcanic soil that

is found in the Dundee Hills, with fist-sized rocks mixed in throughout the topsoil. The site looks

over the Dundee Hills, with views to the Amity Hills and the Eola Hills further south.

We planted 100% Pinot Noir - four different clones on two different rootstocks, and mixed the

clones randomly in the field rather than planting discrete blocks of individual clones. (Many of

our Burgundian friends believe this to be one of the keys, and we're inclined to believe them.)

We farm the site Biodynamically, and sourced all of our plant material from the Biodynamic

nursery at Momtazi Vineyard outside McMinnville. We'll harvest our first tiny crop in 2011. It

will be fascinating to see how the fruit develops and what we're able to produce from this site.

Maresh Vineyard

Maresh Vineyard is situated high in the Dundee Hills on a beautiful south-facing slope.

Planted in 1970, this is the 5th oldest vineyard in Oregon, and the oldest on Worden Hill

Road in the Dundee Hills AVA.

Few Oregon winemakers ever get to work with truly "Old Vines," and Maresh is a precious

jewel. We are honored to be able to lease 7.29 acres of this historic vineyard, which we

began farming ourselves as of 2007. Our blocks are planted to the Pommard clone on its

own roots, on a wide 8′x12′ spacing (as was the common practice of the era). We have

converted our acreage at Maresh to Biodynamic viticulture, and long-time Maresh vineyard

manager Stirling Fox is now at the helm on our behalf.

Momtazi Vineyard

Our proud association with Momtazi Vineyard began in 2006. We're honored to work with

Mo, Flora and Tahmiene Momtazi and their entire team. Over 250 acres are planted and

certified Biodynamic at this spectacular site in the McMinnville AVA.

Our acreage here is split between 4 different blocks on separate sections of the vineyard,

with a mix of Dijon clones 113, 114, 115 & 777 - all planted in 1999. Momtazi is meticulously

and rigorously farmed in strict accordance with Biodynamic principles, and is the source of

fruit for a number of Oregon's finest wines.

Ribbon Ridge Vineyard

Dewey and Robin Kelly's 9 acre vineyard is in the true sweet-spot of the Ribbon Ridge AVA.

The Kellys, both longtime chefs and fixtures of the Oregon culinary scene, purchased the

land in the early 1970s, and were married on the land nearly 25 years ago. They realized

their dream of planting a Pinot Noir vineyard here in 2001.

We have several smaller blocks here totaling 4 acres, equally split between Pommard and

777 clones, and all on the sedimentary Willakenzie soil. The vineyard slopes South-East,

and is planted on 5′x5′ spacing. Surrounded by Beaux Frères Upper Terrace, Brick House

and Bryce Vineyard, this is truly a favored site for Pinot Noir. Management is handled by top

Oregon consultant Buddy Beck. Ribbon Ridge is a certified L.I.V.E./Salmon Safe vineyard.

Our Story

Scott Paul Wines is an artisanal producer of Willamette Valley, Oregon

Pinot Noir, based in historic, downtown Carlton. We also import wine

directly from France -  from over 20 small family producers in

Burgundy and Champagne, and offer selections from our import

portfolio alongside our Oregon Pinots in our tasting room.

We (founders/proprietors Martha & Scott Wright) launched Scott Paul

Wines in 1999 in California, with a burning passion, much to learn,

contracts for highly coveted fruit, small investments from a few folks

who believed in us, and most importantly, the tutelage of Greg

LaFollette, a dear friend and mentor. That fall we crushed 7 tons of

fruit, and the following year bottled 350 cases of the first Scott Paul

wines.

It wasn't long though before Oregon's cool climate and great success

with Pinot Noir lured us to the Willamette Valley. We began our

Oregon winemaking starting with the 2000 vintage, and Scott took a

position as Managing Director of Domaine Drouhin Oregon in 2001.

We moved our production to the Carlton Winemakers Studio for the

2003-2005 vintages.

In 2003, Cameron Healy, founder of Kettle Chips, dear friend &

mentor, became a partner in Scott Paul Wines. We were ready to have

control over our winemaking environment and to grow our small

brand, so we devised plans to build a new winery facility and tasting

room. Excited by the opportunity to participate in Carlton's

rejuvenation, we bought two historic buildings and began their

renovation in 2005. Our winery is housed in a repurposed granary, the

former Madsen Grain Company, built in 1900, while our brick tasting

room was originally a creamery, built in 1915. Renovation was

completed just in time to open our doors in June 2006, and to start

making wine in our new facility that fall. That same year we launched

our Burgundy Import Company, Scott Paul Selections

Our Wines

We produce a few different Oregon Pinot Noirs, the number of which

depends on the character of the vintage and what each of our

individual vineyards gave us from the year. Our total annual

production averages under 2,000 cases, with no plans grow the brand

any larger.

Our mission is to hand-craft small lots of exquisite Pinot Noir. To us

that means wines that are focused on elegance and finesse, the

benchmarks of what we consider to be the very heart and soul of Pinot

Noir. The goal is wines that will seduce you, rather than hit you over

the head. Think Audrey Hepburn, rather than Pamela Anderson.

Every vintage we produce our two mainstay wines, Audrey and La

Paulée. Additionally we may produce a few micro-production bottlings

of a couple hundred cases or less - often from single vineyards or

individual single blocks. From the outstanding 2008 vintage, we have

produced a wine we call D122 from our six best barrels of Ribbon

Ridge Vineyard, and a wine named Dom Denise from Biodynamically-

grown fruit in Momtazi Vineyard.

Importing Burgundy & Champagne - Scott Paul Selections

In 2005 we launched our  import company, Scott Paul Selections. We

import over 100 different wines from 20 different producers in

Burgundy and Champagne and sell them nationally through our

distribution channels, as well as offer them for tasting and for sale in

our tasting room. Red Burgundies are produced from the same grape

we grow here - Pinot Noir - allowing us to offer visitors the unique

opportunity to taste New World Pinot from Oregon and Old World Pinot

from Burgundy side by side. In 2007 we expanded our portfolio to

include Scott's other great love, Grower Champagne. We now import

several bottlings from four of Champagne's star growers. Scott's

passion for wine was born over many bottles of great Burgundy and

Champagne on the family dinner table while growing up in Chicago.

He's a student of all things Burgundian, and spends up to eight weeks

each year in the region working closely with all of our producers.
