- Reg. $13.99, SALE $6.99 (Taste in-store today 4-7pm & Saturday 3-6pm for FREE)
- Grenache/Syrah Blend
- Sale Ends 8/28/11

Grenache and Syrah go together like peas and carrots. They complement each other so well that its no surprise that blends of those 2 grapes are being produced on several continents. This week we have an inspired Grenache Syrah blend from the south of France that is almost too good to be true. Domaine du Grand Chemin is a small family owned estate in the Frances prolific Languedoc region. It is situated within site of the Mediterranean Sea where the omnipresent sun and warm sea breeze are perfect for ripening wine grapes. This 08 is drinking exceptionally well with a heady aroma of fresh lavender, blueberry compote, mocha, and orange. The palate is smooth and medium bodied with a luscious dose of warming spice on the finish. Come by the store to taste it for free tonight. We think that youll agree that this is a ridiculously good value. As someone who loves great red wine, youre going to kick yourself if you miss out on this deal!

This price expires on August 28th at 6PM and is limited to in-store quantities. No rain checks given. Call (303) 936-0272 to hold bottles with a credit card.

Mile High's Spirit of the Week:

Buffalo Trace Single Oak Project Bourbon 375ml

- Reg. $64.99, SALE $55.99 (LIMITED - less than 1 case available)
- Sale Ends 8/28/11

"The Single Oak Project is the most extensive bourbon experiment ever undertaken... It all started with 96 individually selected American oak trees that differed according to the number of growth rings per inch and growing location. Each tree was then cut into two parts - top and bottom - yielding 192 unique tree sections. A single barrel was constructed from each unique section... and were then charred differently. These single oak barrels were then filled with different recipe whiskeys, at various entry proofs and aged in a variety of different warehouse styles. We believe that this experiment will allow you to directly compare the impact of 7 different critical variables across 192 bottles for a total of 1,396 taste combinations. None of the 192 bottles in the complete set are exactly alike."

Delicate and refreshing in style, Camas Sauvignon Blanc has flavors of white peach, citrus, and a touch of river rock.  Lastly, we will taste our Wine of the Week, Grand Chemin, read Steve's review here.

At Saturday's tasting we're featuring some great value beers and wines.  Before September Bomber's of the Month roll around, we wanted to give everyone a last opportunity to try Tilted Smile Imperial Pilsner this Saturday, read Andre's review here.

Casa Santiago Sauvignon Blanc is really bright and refreshing on the palate with generous flavors of fresh lemon zest and tart green apples.  Eco Balance is an interesting Carmenere with a cool smoky nose leading into a richly textured palate highlighted by flavors of ripe blueberries, cocoa, black cherries, and roasted plums. All delicious and for a fantastic value!  As well as another opportunity to try the Wine of the Week, Grand Chemin, read Steve's review here.

White Rose Wine's Mercotti's Milieu 2007 Pinot Noir

- Reg. $34.99, SALE $17.99
- Sale Ends 3/20/11

We have a rare treat for you Pinot lovers this week. Pinot Noir has become so popular that we almost never manage to find a good one that we can get at a deep enough discount to feature as a "Wine of the Week". But this week one of our suppliers brought in this gorgeous effort from one of the most respected producers in Oregon's famed Dundee Hills AVA. Mercotti's Milieu is a fantastic example of the sort of complexity and interest that have earned the Dundee Hills a place among the most revered Pinot producing regions on the planet. With a lively nose of cola, smoke, and spice it is sure to quicken your pulse. On the palate there's plenty to love with a creamy mouthfeel and sexy notes of red cherries and ripe plums. It is a strikingly complete wine. It is a true pleasure to drink. There are only 144 bottles available for sale this weekend so it won't last long. Please call the store today to reserve your little piece of Pinot heaven!

Mile High's Bomber of the Month:

Elysian Avatar Jasmine IPA

- Reg. $4.99, SALE $3.99
- Sale Ends 3/31/11

The Elysian Brewing Company is located in the heart of Seattle Washington, and like many of the other Pacific Northwest based breweries, they know a few things about hops. In an area where pale ales are created as if part of a bitterness arms race, Avatar IPA is a different representation of the classic style with an intriguing uniqueness. Elysian utilizes the addition of whole jasmine flowers in the brewing process to add complexity and floral depth while allowing the beer to truly stand on its own within ever competitive beer market. The jasmine is a wonderful addition, creating a bright floral character along with the tropical hops and showcasing a direction for balance rather than one for boldness.

Mile High's Spirit of the Week:

Slieve Foy 8yr Irish Single Malt

- Reg. $42.99, SALE $37.99
- Sale Ends 3/20/11

The Cooley distillery recently won Malt Advocate's distillery of the year award and is one of only three active Irish distilleries.  Cooley is the only independent distillery however as the other two are both members of the Irish Distiller's Group. They not only make the 8yr Slieve Foy, but also Connemara and Tyrconnell. This beauty is non chill-filtered and aged for 8 years in American white oak casks originally used for bourbon whisky.  The nose is light, elegant, and inviting, with notes of warm vanilla, caramel and freshly baked sugar cookies. A treasure for the palate. Delicately floral and fruity with notes of ripe banana, boiled sweets, vanilla, dark chocolate, coffee, spice and a lingering malt flavor infused with oak. Slieve Foy has an amazingly long finish which is uncharacteristic for most Irish whiskey.

Mile High's Wine of the Week:

Embocadero Ribera del Duero Tempranillo 2008

- Reg. $35.99, SALE $16.99
- 91pts Robert Parker
- Sale Ends 3/13/11

The 2008 Embocadero Ribera del Duero is a perfect example of why Spanish reds have become so popular lately. This wine would be solid value at the regular price, but at nearly $20 off it is simply sensational. It displays the sort of density and concentration that is usually reserved for much more expensive wines. With luscious notes of vanilla, black cherry pie, and sweet tobacco it gives so much pleasure on the palate. But it doesn't end there. Embocadero is still on the evolutionary upswing. It's getting better every day and promises to continue improving for at least the next 2 years as the rather prodigious amount of oak begins to integrate more harmoniously. Do yourself a favor and grab as many of these as you can afford this week. Then you can delight in Embocadero's evolution over the next several years!

Mile High's Bomber of the Month:

Girardin Black Label Gueuze

- Reg. $11.99, SALE $9.99
- Sale Ends 3/31/11
- 100pts Rate Beer

If you like sour beer, and have never tried a Gueuze (pronounced gooze), do not hesitate any longer! Gueuze is a type of Belgian Lambic beer that is made by blending young and old lambics into a new beer, which is then bottled for a second fermentation. Additionally, because of the aged hops, and the wild yeast that are used in the original lambics, the resulting Gueuze is completely unique, and bears little resemblance to most other styles of beer. The taste is often described as sour and barnyard-like.

Mile High's Spirit of the Week:

Balvenie 12yr Doublewood

- Reg. $52.99, SALE $36.99
- Sale Ends 3/31/11

Balvenie is one of the last remaining distilleries that still utilizes home grown barley, practices traditional floor maltings and provides a team of on site coopers. These factors make Balvenie's whiskeys unlike any throughout the rest of Scotland. The Doublewood is matured in traditional oak whiskey casks before being transferred to first fill European Sherry casks for a total of twelve years of barrel aging. The sherry imparts a graceful sweetened note of caramelized sugars and honey without covering up the subtle aromas of oak and vanilla. With a rich palate of toffee, a brightness of baking spices and the complexity of sherry makes the Balvenie Doublewood of the smoothest whiskeys in all of Scotland.

La Legua "Capricho" 2003

- Reg. $74.99, SALE $29.99
- 93pts Robert Parker
- Sale Ends 2/20/11

We have a special treat for you this week! Capricho just sort of fell into our lap at the end of last year and we are so excited to be able to offer it to you now. This beauty is composed entirely of tempranillo from a lesser known region in Spain called Cigales. It is a true connoisseurs wine with the sort of layered complexity that easily justifies its $75 release price. The nose presents impressive aromas of wood smoke, cedar, tobacco, and rose petals. The lush juicy palate gives such pleasure with ample flavors of black currants and ripe red cherries. It is a wine to savor and one to ponder. Open a bottle and drink it slowly over the course of a couple of hours so that you can marvel in its evolution. There were only 1000 bottles of Capricho made in the 2003 vintage. We managed to get about 10% of that. Please call the store today to grab yours because these won't last at such a low price!

Mile High's Beer of the Week:

Samuel Smith Organic Lager 18.7oz

- Reg. $3.49, SALE $2.99
- Sale Ends 2-28-11
- 99pts Rate Beer

This week, we would like to feature a Sammy Smith beer that is a bit less common than some of the others. Their Organic Lager is a great example of the early pale lagers of Europe. The main ingredient in this beer is lightly kilned organic lager malt that is grown in the UK, backed by an ample addition of UK Vienna malt. Most of the hops used in this recipe are from England as well. This beer is certified organic by the USDA-accredited UK Soils Association. Cheers to Samuel Smith for sourcing out local ingredients and supporting organic agriculture!

Mile High's Interview with the Importer:

Tom Jasko, Merchant du Vin

- 10 Questions with the Importer

Importers have contracts with breweries outside the US. Merchant du Vin is the only importer that started and still remains, focusing on styles of beer of folklore breweries. MdV was the first company in the US to market beer by style, similar to wines. Our portfolio is comprised of breweries that are the benchmarks for the styles they produce.

Mile High's New Arrivals:

New Wild Ales from Russian River and New Belgium

- More Pliny the Elder too

If you like Wild Ales, you'll love our New Arrivals this week.  From New Belgium we have  Le Terroir, a barrel aged, dry hopped Sour Ale. Russian River's Sanctification Sour Blonde is fermented with 100% Brettanomyces, no traditional Ale or Lager yeast is used.  Redemption Blonde Ale is the younger sister to the award-winning Damnation. Fashioned after a Belgian-style "single," this style is rarely brewed in America, let alone Belgium. Typically, "singles" are brewed only at the Trappist Monasteries for the monks to enjoy with meals.  In a unique twist, Redemption is bottle conditioned with Rockpile yeast, an isolated Syrah wine strain.

Schramsberg Brut Rosé is flavorful, complex and dry, making it both versatile with food and delicious by itself as an apéritif. The character of the wine is most strongly influenced by bright, flavorful Pinot Noir grown in Carneros, Anderson Valley, and the Sonoma and Marin coastal areas. A few small lots of Pinot Noir are fermented in contact with their skins to add depth and subtle color to this unique sparkling wine. Chardonnay gives spice, structure and length on the palate.  Abundant strawberry notes and beautiful color make it a perfect fit for Valentine's Day.

Mile High's Bomber of the Month:

Samuel Smith Nut Brown Ale 18.7oz

- Reg. $3.49, SALE $2.99
- All other Samuel Smith 18.7oz bottles on sale too
- Sale Ends 2/28/11

We're celebrating an English icon with a month long salute to the beers of Samuel Smith.  Every week we will review a different Samuel Smith beer, starting with Nut Brown Ale this week.  The standard by which all other Brown Ales are judged, Samuel Smith's Nut Brown Ale is a specialty of Northern England. Brown Ale is one of England's oldest brewing styles, it got it's start in the late 1600's, and was then known as a "Mild Ale." This just meant that it was much less hoppy and bitter than the more popular Pale Ale of the time, and was also a bit younger. Since then, the style has evolved into an incredibly friendly beer for the masses, and while they may have called it "mild" back then, there is definitely no lack of flavor or complexity today.

Mile High's Stout Month Stout of the Week:

Dieu du Ciel Péché Mortel Imperial Coffee Stout 12oz

- Reg. $5.99, SALE $4.99
- Sale Ends 1/16/11

Péché Mortel is the flagship ale of Dieu du Ciel, a tiny microbrewery/brewpub in Montreal, Canada that is committed to quality and creativity. It is a bottle-conditioned Imperial Stout, infused during the brewing process with real, fair-trade coffee. Historically, this style of beer was produced in England to be exported to Russia for the Tsar's Court, hence the true name, Imperial Russian Stout. To prepare for the long voyage across the Baltic, Imperial Stouts were made high in alcohol (9 to 10% alcohol by volume is common) and bitterness to preserve and prevent them from freezing.

With Winter finally setting in, we want to remind everyone about our convenient underground parking garage.  Instead of parking in the Whole Foods lot upstairs and dealing with the harsh winter weather, just drive a little further South on Vance St. and pull into the garage (pictured below).  You will find plenty of parking spots as well as entrances to both Whole Foods and Mile High Wine and Spirits.

Mile High's Bomber of the Month:

Port Brewing Old Viscosity 22oz

- 15% off all month long
- 100pts Rate Beer
- Sale Ends 12/31/10

From Port Brewing in San Marcos, California, Old Viscosity has been nicknamed by it's brewers as "The Big Black Nasty," and they often compare it to motor oil. This hefty brew weighs in at 10.5% ABV and really is black in color from being brewed with caramel and chocolate malts, like a stout. But this is a blended beer that Port says "blurs the boundaries of Porter, Stout, Old Ale and Barleywines." Before bottling, 80% of the latest batch of Old Viscosity is joined with 20% of the previous batch that has been aging in bourbon barrels for one year.

Mile High's Spirit of the Week:

Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage Bourbon

- Reg. $29.99, SALE $25.99
- 95pts Malt Advocate
- Aged for over 10 years

- Sale Ends 12/31/10

We have the pleasure of tasting a lot of great Bourbon here at Mile High Wine and Spirits. It's one of those little fringe benefits... So, when we received our barrel samples of 2000 Vintage Evan Williams Bourbon we jumped right in to the "work" of selecting the best barrel. Barrel No. 1074 stood out as the clear favorite among the crew for its remarkable balance and symmetry. It was so clean and smooth on the palate that we all took notice. There were exuberant notes of sweet brown sugar, warming cinnamon, and fresh corn on the cob on the palate. It was such an elegant and enjoyable whiskey that we simply couldn't resist buying the barrel. Sadly, we only got 186 bottles from that barrel as it seemed clear that angel's made the most of their share. If you're a bourbon lover, or someone on your Christmas list is, then we invite you to pass by the store and grab one of these bottles of Evan Williams 2000 Vintage Barrel No. 1074. We believe that it is truly something special.

Veglio Barolo 2004

- Reg. $32.99, SALE $19.99 available exclusively at Mile High
- 90pts Wine Spectator
- Sale Ends 12/12/10

This week we have a special holiday treat for you! Barolo is the undisputed king of the Northern Italian red wines. It is intensely structured, age worthy, and oh so food friendly. To find one at such a low price is impressive on its own, but to find a 90 point Barolo for under 20 bucks is simply unheard of. The 2004 Veglio is still a young wine but it was made in such an approachable style that it will provide a perfect foil for a wide range of hearty foods. Don't pass up this chance to grab a couple of bottles. Serve one soon with a special holiday meal and then try to forget about the second one for a few years. You can thank us later!

Mile High's Beer of the Week:

Upslope Brown Ale 6pks

- Reg. $8.99, SALE $7.99
- Sale ends 12/12/10

What happened to Brown Ales?  It seems like all you can find these days are thin bodied, sweet ones or "Indian" Brown Ales that are so heavily hopped they no longer belong in the same style category.  Brown Ales might not be as popular as they were 10 years ago, before IPAs became king.  But sometimes I want a beer that's dark, but sessionable; bitter, but balanced.  Upslope Brown Ale is that beer.

Hello Chuck,

We would like to thank everyone who participated in our Community Day fundraiser yesterday.  Your efforts helped us raise over $500 for Foothills Animal Foundation.  In the last 2 months, we have raised over $5000 for local charities through our tastings and other fundraising endeavors.  We wouldn't be able to make these donations without the support of our loyal customers.  Thank you for being so generous at a time of the year when charities need help the most.

This week's Wine of the Week is a blend of Syrah and Garnacha from Spain.  It is only $7.99 per bottle, but received 90pts from Robert Parker.  Can you say value?

Mile High's Wine of the Week:

Besso de Vino Seleccion 2009

- Reg. $11.99, SALE $7.99
- 90pts Robert Parker "It is shockingly good for the money."
- Sale Ends 12/5/10

You love bold full bodied reds, right? And you love eight dollar reds that taste like they cost twenty, right? If you just nodded your head yes in answer to those 2 questions then this week's "Wine of the Week" is going to make you very happy! Beso de Vino Seleccion is a delightful Spanish blend of Syrah and Garnacha with enough style and complexity to make it candidate for the best under $10 red that we've sold all year! It opens with a luscious nose of warm cherry pie and spice. Then it transitions into a creamy and complex palate highlighted by gobs of ripe blueberry flavor. It's the kind of red that will impress your guests with its smooth texture and striking finish. This is the sort of wine that you should seriously consider buying by the case.

Mile High's Bomber of the Month:

St. Bernardus Abt 12 750ml

- Reg. $11.99, SALE $9.99 - All month long!
- 100pts Rate Beer
- Sale Ends 12/31/10

Abt 12... what does that mean? Well, Abt is the strongest beer that a monastery produces in order to honor or please their high priest, known as the Abbot. The number 12 is derived from the Belgian specific gravity reading, which is much like our Alcohol by Volume (ABV) reading of the beer. While Abt 12 is no longer 12% ABV, it still rings in at 10.5%, and remains the strongest beer produced by St. Bernardus. This beer has been produced since the late 19th century, it is a Belgian Quadrupel style ale from St. Bernardus in Watou, Belgium. It is their flagship ale and it doesn't get much better than this.
