L'ANGEVIN WINES

our story

Welcome to L'Angevin Wines

The release of our L'Angevin wines from the 2007 vintage we feel is our finest effort since we began our wine adventure in 2001. We experienced an excellent growing season beginning with a warm, dry spring that resulted in an ideal fruit set. This set the pace for the beautifully moderate weather we enjoyed through harvest. When coupled with our diligent farming practices we could call the vintage perfection. The success in the vineyard carried through to the winery where we produced wines possessing amazing depth, opulent fruit, length and texture.

Our Story

L'Angevin began as a joint venture between Alan Peirson and Robbie Meyer who met at Peter Michael Winery where Robbie was the enologist and assistant winemaker, and Alan was the estate/project manager. Joining the venture in 2002, making L'Angevin an entirely family business are Lesley Warner-Peirson and Shannon Meyer.

This year brings new changes to our L'Angevin label. We are entering into a partnership with the owners of the Laughlin Vineyard. The L'Angevin label will become the home for the wines we produce from the Laughlin Family Vineyard in the Russian River Valley. Our long-term goal is for L'Angevin to be an estate grown and bottled program.

Our Charles Heintz Chardonnay and Sonoma Stage Vineyard Pinot Noir formerly under the L'Angevin label have moved over to our Peirson Meyer label. Only the label has changed for these wines; what is inside the bottle continues with the same care, attention, and artisanal winemaking we have brought to you with each previous vintage.

The Name & Logo

Robbie's mother's family name, was the obvious choice when we selected a name for our endeavor. Pictured above is Robbie Meyer's maternal grandfather, Elphage Marcel L'Angevin. The photo was taken in 1918 in Boston.

The name L'Angevin, could serendipitously be separated into the French words Ange (angel) and Vin (wine), giving us "angel wine." Actually, the name is derived from the Old French Andegavia referring to the winegrowing region of Anjou, France where Robbie's ancestors lived.

The three red squares originate from Alan Peirson's art history background and his interest in Asian printmaking. In Alan's own clay work and sculptures of clay, wood, stone and bronze, his signature is three stamped squares.

Winemaker notes:
This represents our seventh vintage of the L'Angevin Russian River Chardonnay. The signature aromas of Asian Pear, white flowers, and crushed stone, are highlighted with notes of spice, honey, and apple crisp. Its delicate entry gently coats the palate and offers a balanced acidity that frames the flinty minerality.

Yellow-gold. Leesy peach and poached pear aromas are complemented by notes of anise and smoky herbs. Fleshy and supple, offering deep orchard and pit fruit flavors and slow-mounting spiciness. A tangy mineral quality lingers on the gently sweet, persistent finish. -89 pts.

Wine Spectator, June 2009
A mix of ripe, creamy fig, melon and melon fruit. Full-bodied, with hints of mineral, hazelnut and spice and a complex, lingering finish. Drink now through 2012. -89 pts.

Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, March 2010
Under the L'Angevin label, the 2007 Chardonnay Russian River possesses abundant amounts of opulent pear, pineapple, and other assorted tropical fruits intermixed with a notion of wood spice as well as an attractive, fleshy, medium to full-bodied personality with nice texture and length. Drink it over the next 2-3 years. - 90 pts.

L'Angevin Chardonnay
Laughlin Family Vineyard
Russian River Valley

Winemaker notes:
This represents the best of what the Laughlin Family Vineyard has to offer. The wine presents many layers of aromas from lighter essences of honeysuckle and lycee fruit, to heady notes of fruit blossoms blood orange marmalade, mangosteen, and graham cracker. A rich and an expressive statement on the palate, it nicely maintains the vibrant mouthfeel of a classic Russian River Chardonnay.

Greenish-gold. Smoke, lees and honey on the nose. Sappy orchard fruit and melon flavors coat the palate with surprising energy, picking up anise and nougat character on the back end. Fleshy and smooth chardonnay, with very good finishing breadth and lingering sappiness. This wine is powerful enough to handle richly sauced fish or poultry dishes.
-90 pts.

Wine Spectator, June 2009
Smooth-textured, with creamy spice, apple and pear notes and hazelnut and butterscotch hints. Turns sleek and elegant, ending with a long, complex finish. Drink now through 2012. -91 pts.

Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, March 2010
A brilliant wine, the 2007 Chardonnay Laughlin Family Vineyard exhibits a light gold color, more orange blossom, nectarine, and buttered citrus notes, full-bodied power, and superb texture, richness, and length. This sexy, complex Chardonnay was aged in 55% new French oak, spent 16 months on its lees, and was bottled unfined and unfiltered. - 94 pts

2007 l'angevin pinot noir

2007
L'Angevin Pinot Noir
Russian River Valley

Winemaker notes:
This wine exemplifies Russian River Pinot Noir. Aromas of freshly crushed black cherry, bergamot, black tea leaves, subtle spice and sandalwood interplay with notes of fresh soil and forest floor. An even and smooth entry cascades across the balanced and weighty palate. Hints of white chocolate remain throughout its long and textured finish.

Vivid red. Spicy red and dark berry aromas are complicated by notes of cinnamon, rose and musky underbrush. Fleshy, gently sweet red berry flavors are firmed by a refreshingly bitter cherry skin quality and become spicier with air. Manages to be both rich and lithe, repeating the red fruits on the finish. -90 pts.

Wine Spectator, June 2009
Firm, intense and vibrant, rich and concentrated, this full-bodied, spicy version is marked by complex earthy cherry, wild berry and blackberry fruit that gains depth and focus on the long, intricate finish, supported by firm, dry tannins. Drink now through 2014. -90 pts.

Robert Parker, The Wine Advoate, March 2010
The 2007 Pinot Noir Russian River (100% de-stemmed) comes from Dijon clones 828 and 777 as well as the old Calera and Swan clones. Apparently there is also some of that special "suitcase" clone from Vosne-Romanee in the blend. The wine possesses abundant amounts of blueberry, sweet cherry, underbrush, spice box, and earth characteristics along with good density, decent acidity, and silky tannins. Already evolved and complex, it should continue to drink well for another 5-6 years. - 90 pts.
