 What is Inca Gold Pisco?

Pisco glass created by Riedel to capture the bouquet and essence of Inca Gold Pisco

"Pisco is to Peru what Scotch is to Scotland and Tequila is to Mexico..."

Inca Gold Pisco is an ultra premium spirit distilled from 100% Quebranta and Italia grapes. Produced under exacting standards, it is the result of over 200 years dedication to creating exceptional piscos.

Our unique process begins on a single private estate where the finest grapes are grown, crushed and fermented. Select Quebranta and Italia grapes are blended in precise proportions which give IGP its characteristic aroma and smoothness. This special blending process produces what is called an "Acholado" pisco.

After distillation in copper alambic stills, IGP rests 9 months in special containers that prepare the pisco for bottling. The last step involves Inca Gold Pisco being hand bottled in frosted glass in small batch quantities. This ensures IGP maintains its artisan qualities of aroma, smoothness and full bouquet. For these reasons, Inca Gold Pisco ranks among the world's most desirable acholado piscos.

History of Pisco

Machu Pichu

Inca Gold Pisco was first commercially produced in 1776 in Ica, Peru where the semiarid climate of the Pacific coast nurtured grape varietals brought to South America by Spanish explorers.

These varietals flourished in their new environment, producing excellent wines that were exported to Europe until the 17th century when the King of Spain banned their production.

Prohibited from making wine, farmers began distilling their grape must and the result was a crystal clear, flavorful and potent spirit they called Pisco.  In a nearby town and sea port, both sharing the name Pisco sea merchants discovered this new spirit and carried it north to California in large clay pots that were also called "Piskos", and so the appellation of "Pisco" was born.

As Pisco became readily available in San Francisco and the surrounding gold-rush areas, it quickly became the spirit of choice for its characteristic flavor and potency. Duncan Nicol, proprietor of the Bank Exchange Saloon in San Francisco seized on Pisco and concocted one of the earliest American cocktails, Pisco Punch.

Pisco Punch was a tremendous success in the financial district of San Francisco and gained worldwide fame when such travelers as Rudyard Kipling, Mark Twain and Harold Ross (founder of "New Yorker" magazine) marveled at it's effect on the consumer. In 1889, in Rudyard Kipling's epic from Sea to Sea, he immortalized Pisco Punch writing that it, "is compounded of the shavings of cherub's wings, the glory of a tropical dawn, the red clouds of sunset and the fragments of lost epics by dead masters."

Recently, a book has been published, "Wings of Cherubs", which recounts the origins of and influence of Pisco Punch on San Francisco. Details can be viewed at www.piscopunch.com.

PiscObama "cocktail for change"contest held in Atlanta to commemorate the presidency of Barack Obama

Some of Atlanta's best mixologists mixed it up in a spirited competition to create "a cocktail for change" - to commemorate the presidency of Barack Obama - using Inca Gold Pisco, a premium, crystal clear spirit from Peru.

The PiscObamasm (pronounced peace.ko.bama) contest was created by Walt Bauer, CEO of Inca Spirits, the importer of Inca Gold Pisco. Contestants were asked to use Inca Gold Pisco, a crystal clear brandy made in the tradition of the fine cognacs of France, plus one or more international spirits, liqueurs, mixes or juices.

1st Place Winner of the PiscObama contest

(L-R) Primary Judge Greg Best, partner, Holeman and Finch Public House;  Jonny Abens, Trois;  Walt Bauer, CEO of Inca Spirits.

Judging and presentation of awards took place under the able supervision of Greg Best, master mixologist and partner at Holeman and Finch Public House, a top dining adventure in Buckhead, Atlanta.

Platinum award winner, Jonny Abens, a mixologist at Trois restaurant in Midtown, Atlanta, created the winning cocktail using Inca Gold Pisco brandy, roasted red pepper puree, pineapple, lemon juice and simple syrup. The drink was topped with a spicy, dried pineapple chip - a nod to Obama's Hawaiian roots.

Gold award winner Dinah Peña, a mixologist at Whiskey Park at the W Midtown-Atlanta hotel, created a coffee-infused Pisco cocktail with lemon and Navan, a vanilla liqueur, topped with meringue. Pena said her culinary background led to her choices. " Lemon goes well with coffee and so does vanilla. I went with egg whites to throw in something traditional -meringue on top."

Silver award winner Shira Heffernan, a mixologist at Front Page News in Midtown, Atlanta, used Kenyan coffee espresso, Amaretto, Baileys, Crème de Menthe and a sprig of fresh mint. Said Heffernan, "The Kenyan coffee represents Obama's heritage...And the hint of mint is because he is nothing less than cool."

Two mixologists at popular Atlanta gathering spots received Honorable Mentions: Adam Fox at Beleza in Midtown; and Tarik Livingstone at Ted's Montana Grill on Peachtree Road in Buckhead.
