Treana is a family-owned and operated winery. Located in Paso Robles, CA, exactly mid-way between Los Angeles and San Francisco, the region is the heart of California's distinctive Central Coast region. The Hope family has been farming in Paso Robles since 1978. The name Treana symbolizes a trinity of natural elements - the sun, the soil, and the ocean - elements that make Paso Robles, and the rest of the Central Coast, an exceptional area for wine grapes. Treana wines reflect local geography and climate: rolling hills, calcareous soils, sunny summer days tempered by cool afternoon ocean breezes and as much as forty-degree temperatures swings between day and night. The grapes respond accordingly, with good sugar levels and balanced acids. The grapes that go into Treana also benefit from a good deal of knowledge, expertise and commitment to uncompromising quality. The Hope family planted wine-grapes in Paso Robles in 1978. They were among a handful of pioneering families who helped to shape and gain recognition for this distinctive winegrowing region. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc were the varieties first planted by the Hopes. They worked with terrains in distinctly different vineyard sites both east and west of the Salinas River. Initially, demand for their grapes came primarily from wineries outside of Paso Robles, including Napa Valley. In the early 90's, the family began producing estate wines under the Hope Family Farms label. At this time, they focused their farming efforts to better suit the Paso Robles terroir and eliminated their white grape plantings entirely. Instead, they opted to source Chardonnay and white Rhone varieties from the cooler climates of Monterey County. It had become abundantly clear to them that Paso Robles was capable of producing bold red wines that could compete in the international arena. The Hopes established Treana Winery in 1996. Today, third- generation farmer Austin Hope is at the helm as director of winemaking and viticulture for the flagship brand. He remains uncompromising in his pursuit of wines of exceptional quality that specifically reflect their growing regions. Treana Red, a Cabernet Sauvignon-based proprietary blend, is sourced from top vineyards in Paso Robles. Treana White, a blend of Viognier and Marsanne, continues to gain critical acclaim from chefs, sommeliers and wine media internationally. The wines are distributed in all 50 states nationally and in Canada, Germany and Japan.
Liberty School is a family-owned winery in Paso Robles, the heart of California's Central Coast. This unique growing region is characterized by a diversity of vineyard soils, its proximity to the coast, and a climate of diurnal temperature shifts of up to 50 degrees. The Hope family planted wine grapes here in 1978. Since then, their history and reputation for quality in the region have helped to define and promote Paso Robles wines nationally. In the early 1980's, Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles caught the attention of renowned Napa Valley vintner Chuck Wagner of Caymus Vineyards. In search of Cabernet for his second label, Liberty School, Wagner approached Hope Farms as a fruit source. As growers over the next decade, the Hope family helped build the brand's solid reputation for quality and value. In 1996, after nearly two decades of grape growing, the Hopes established Treana Winery. The winery's presence in Paso Robles provided a natural transition for Liberty School Cabernet Sauvignon to join the Treana family of wines. The Hopes took over the label, later adding a Central Coast Chardonnay, Syrah and Cuvée to the Liberty School line. values in California wine. The goal is deceptively simple: delicious, fruit-driven, varietally correct wines at reasonable prices. Austin Hope and Westside Red wines are distributed throughout the United States and some parts of Canada. These wines can also be purchased from the winery. Candor wines aim to fill a gaping hole in the wine marketplace: really good, varietally true, affordable California reds made from Merlot and Zinfandel. There are plenty of soft, quaffable, easy-drinking wines from these varieties out there for ten bucks or so, and some stunning, exceptional bottles for $40 or $50. In between, in all Candor, the pickings can be slim. With all the vineyard acreage and winemaking knowledge in California, mid-priced wines don't have to be forgettable. The raw materials and talent are there to grow and bottle serious varietal wines, full of ripe, rich fruit, wines with a come-hither nose and a real, live finish. Complete wines that don't max out your credit card. What you need to pull this off is knowing your vineyard sources and keeping a steady hand on the winemaking. The Hope family-the people behind the wines of Liberty School and Treana-have built up over decades a stellar set of relationships with family-owned vineyards up and down the state. They know a good site from a weak one, a careful farmer from a careless one, and how to work with growers to get the best out of a piece of land. Having all those separate lots available-and, where it helps the wine, using multiple vintages as well-gives a good winemaker plenty to work with. Candor's winemaker is a good one indeed: Austin Hope, who also makes the highly -regarded, highly-rated wines for Treana and his own Austin Hope label. Austin's track record with ultra-premium wines shows up in every value-priced glass of Candor. Over-delivery: that's the idea He's Back. Westside Red enters the scene. He's been waiting for his chance to return and the moment has finally arrived. If there's a bit of bravado in his gait, it's because he knows he's been missed. Since the last vintage of Westside Red, his family of Hope has been inundated with calls for more. He represents the Rhône blend category well and now he's back - with a new look. This time, it's back to basics - a clean, bright label and a wine that over-delivers. Still a Rhône-based blend, this guy is 53% Syrah, 37% Mourvèdre and 10% Grenache. The wine is made from hand-selected estate fruit from the Hope Family Vineyard, which sits in the heart of the Templeton Gap, in Paso Robles. Westside Red is a multi-vintage blend that melds together barrel-aged wine from 2007 and 2008 and new bright and juicy wine from 2009. Westside Red is a bit of a Troublemaker - he doesn't play by the standard tradition of vintage dating or taking himself too seriously. But there's good reason; he is utterly delicious. The wine is reminiscent of its Northern Rhône inspiration - deep color, smoky aromatics, and lush mouth-feel. It immediately brings a smile to your face and excites your senses. Troublemaker's hometown is Paso Robles, just like his siblings from Hope Family Wines - Treana, Liberty School, Candor and Austin Hope. Paso is one of the most exciting wine regions going these days and Westside Red is joining in the fun - he's ready. Bring him to a special dinner, a backyard BBQ with friends, or home after a long days work. He's ready for crystal, plastic or your favorite tumbler. Cheers.
