Heritage

Tequila has a complex history dating back hundreds of years. This unique spirit has always been a source of Mexican pride, as a product that defines and celebrates our unique culture.

Making premium tequila is an art. The process of crafting tequila is formidable and the quality-control restrictions imposed by Mexican law are rigorous. In fact, the primary ingredient of tequila can only be derived from one species of agave-the blue agave. This special plant grows primarily in the Mexican state of Jalisco, the site of our distillery, La Alteña.

Although not part of the cactus family, agave plants can grow nearly as large, measuring 5 to 8 feet tall at the leaves and 7 to 12 feet in diameter from tip to tip. During the harvest, the jimador farmers use sharp axes, called coas, to cut through the long and extremely sharp leaves of the plant to get to the sweet and juicy piña core.

Tequila is either made from 100% agave or it is a mixto-a blend of agave with other additives like sugar-based syrups, or artificial flavors. Tequila aficionados prefer tequila made with 100% agave for its premium quality and taste, without any artificial additives.

El Tesoro de Don Felipe® Tequila is committed to making only 100% agave spirits, as we have done by hand for over 70 years.

From start to finish, El Tesoro de Don Felipe® tequilas are still made by hand-a process that may take longer, but one we believe is worth the wait.

The story of our tequila isn't just about premium taste and quality; it's about people. Our family has over 200 years of tequila experience, and we are still devoted to upholding the tradition of creating a product based on quality, not quantity. We use the same process that Don Felipe Camarena used when he introduced El Tesoro 70 years ago. It's nurtured by generations of people who have dedicated themselves to making this unique spirit by hand, every step of the way.

We are proud of our heritage, and the hands that make El Tesoro

1 part El TesoroTM Platinum Tequila
4 parts citrus soda
½ part fresh lime juice
Salt

Pour the tequila into a salt-rimmed Collins glass filled with ice. Add citrus soda. Splash lime juice on top and enjoy. Some recipes call for grapefruit juice or club soda, but, according to El Tesoro Tequila's Master Distiller, the authentic way to drink a Paloma is with citrus soda, which became popular in Mexico in the mid-1970s.

Mellow and rich, with subtle wood tones. Reposado, or rested, tequila has to be aged for two months - we let our Reposado rest longer, for 11 months. Aged in oak barrels the tequila has a hint of sweetness without overpowering the agave flavors, making this tequila great on the rocks.

Remarkably full and balanced flavor, some tequila connoisseurs call El Tesoro Añejo one of the world's finest sipping tequilas - and we don't disagree. Mexican law requires Añejo ("year") tequila to age for at least one year. El Tesoro Añejo is aged two to three years in oak barrels. This tequila is best enjoyed in a brandy snifter.

A Coincidence of Lucky 7s

El Tesoro Aniversario was made from agave harvested in 2000 by Carlos and his late father. The typical sugar content of blue agave lies between 30-33%. This agave had the highest sugar content of any of the plants they had ever harvested, 37% -- we had to do something special with it.

Was it a coincidence that the distillery was built in 1937 and the agave had 37% sugar content? Was it a coincidence that if we aged this tequila for 7 years longer than any other tequila is aged that it would be ready for the distillery's 70th anniversary on 7/7/07?

What is certain is that this tequila is truly unique and special.

Aged for seven years in white oak American bourbon barrels, this limited-edition "Extra Añejo" offers a rare tequila experience. Carlos says that El Tesoro Aniversario is "soft and sweet, with scents of chocolate and vanilla and a hint of spice. There are stronger tastes of oak, with an almond-like flavor, and a rich agave finish."

El Tesoro Aniversario is an exclusive edition, as only 2007 cases were handcrafted at La Alteña, and they are now hard to locate due to popular demand. This is a limited reserve for collectors only.
