Hello Fellow WhiskeyLovers -

Few things seem more absurd-yet-exciting to me than watching a 1,000+ pound animal race around an oval track with a pint-sized person straddling its back. Yet that is exactly what millions of American's will be watching on May 5th, when the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby takes place at Churchill Downs in ten (10!) days.

And what better way to watch the derby, either at the race or on TV, and kick-off the rights of spring than with a exquisite Mint Julep cradled in your hand.  It's the quintessential southern cocktail, and the official beverage of the race, made with bourbon, sugar and a mint leaf.  Yum!

As any mixologist worth their tip will tell you, the sum quality of a cocktail is only as good as the individual ingredients used.  Sugar is easy...fresh mint can be found at most supermarkets...but the bourbon is the detail we all too often skimp on.

But not this year...

This weeks Whiskey Wednesday featured whisky is one of the finest bourbons available, Woodford Reserve Distillers Select Single Barrel Small Batch Bourbon in a 1-liter Kentucky Derby commemorative bottle designed by one of America's most recognized and beloved illustrators, Michael Schwab.

Born in Oklahoma, Michel Schwab now lives and works in Northern California.  From his studio in Marin County, he has established a reputation as one of America's most recognized and best-loved graphic artists.

Having attended school in Texas, New York, and California, Michael has a broad array of visual, cultural, and geographic references to which he regularly turns for ideas. His work is easily recognized by his signature use of large, flat areas of color, dramatic perspectives, and bold, graphic portraits often communicating a message of ecological and historic preservation.

Additionally, his work is in the permanent collection of the Library of Congress and the National Portrait Gallery.

This is a limited production bottle only available for another 10 days.  Fortunately for us, our man Nicky "The Neck" avidly "plays the ponies", and has connections throughout the racing world. So of course we have secured more than our fair share of this phenomenal whiskey, in this beautiful and collectable bottle.

And so we're "champing at the bit" to offer you a bottle of this 1-liter Kentucky Derby Commemorative Bottle of Woodford Reserve Distillers Select Single Barrel Small Batch Bourbon for $49.95/ bottle

I hope you will use your horse-sense, and take advantage of the opportunity to purchase this amazing whisky while it's still available...because once it's gone...

And until next week...have fun!

Hello Fellow Scotch Lovers -

Well last weeks email, with an offering for "Tuthilltown Hudson Single Male Whisky" elicited some great responses:

ForScotchLovers member BadGirl63 replied "Hee, hee....Well having a single male close at hand IS the best time to be drinking right?" - Isn't she a naughty girl?

Jeff H fired back "Regarding that Hudson Single Male whisky...is that not recommended for us married folk? ;-)" - No Jeff...for you married guys we recommend "Deaths Door"

And Gene T inquired: "Have any single female whiskey? :-)" - Gene, May I suggest you join ForScotchLovers, and connect with BagGirl63. I think you might have a lot in common.

It's good to know someone actually reads these emails!

This week, I am thrilled to offer you all the opportunity to pre-order the newest

Limited Edition Glenmorangie: Finealta

Finealta, a triumphant recreation of an original Glenmorangie recipe dating from 1903,

is a Limited Edition Glenmorangie with only 600 cases/3,600 bottles shipped into the USA

white oak and Oloroso Sherry casks.

The price for Finealta is $79.00, plus S+H

If you want a bottle, please purchase your Finealta ASAP. As you would expect with a whisky like

TASTING NOTES

AROMA: Caramelized orange, peaches soaked in liqueur, sugared almonds, raisins, lime and a hint of distant wood smoke

TASTE: Initially rich and spicy with mandarin segments and lime which slowly build on the palate to flavors of powdered sugar, chewy meringue and violet

FINISH: Full-rounded aromatic smoke with chalky minerals linger to create a single malt of both finesse and richness

A RICH HISTORY

Finealta Party Image

The original spirit from 1903 would have been made with malted barley dried over a peat-fuelled fire.

The peat was originally dug on the Orkney Islands and delivered to the Glenmorangie Distillery by

steamship. The lightly peated malt added a distinctive layer of smoky flavor to the whisky.

London's Savoy Hotel ordered multiple casks of this Glenmorangie spirit in 1903, during the height

of La Belle Epoque period, when the wealthy and titled freely socialized with artists, writers and the

great actors of the day. The Savoy came to represent the 'joie de vivre' of the era, and Glenmorangie

epitomized its elegant spirit.

Hello Fellow Scotch Lovers -

I trust our first Whisky Wednesday email of 2011 finds you in good health and spirits, and your year is off to a roaring start.

I get most excited when we are able to offer you a whisky that, for the most part, is not available anywhere else. And this is certainly the case with this weeks offering: Kilchoman Un-Chill-Filtered Islay Whisky - Summer 2010 release.

Kilchoman is one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland with an annual production of 90,000 litres of alcohol.

This amazing whisky is matured in a combination of fresh bourbon barrels from Buffalo Trace Distillery, Kentucky and refill casks and fresh oloroso sherry butts, creating a sweet soft peaty flavor unlike any other I've tried.

The retail price is $59.95. If you want a bottle, please purchase it ASAP. We have an limited number of bottles of the Summer 2010 release, and once they're gone, they are gone.

Enjoy!

Kilchoman Summer Release

Review - Courtesy of Cask Strength

Nose: Banana milkshake, wet leaves/humid forest notes, tinned fruit cocktail sweetness and some sherbet. With a hint of water, some malty/gristy notes develop.

Palate: Burnt bonfire peat, charcoal notes, very decisive but not too dominating. With a little hint of water, the palate really opens up with some orchard fruit pie, tablet toffee and peppery BBQ steak.

Finish: Quite fatty/oily and very rich. The bonfire peat starts to develop a more peppery note as the palate dries.

Overall: It's official. Kilchoman keep turning out really well made whisky. Apparently, this release is Anthony Wills' favourite so far. It of course bears many similarities with the previous releases, but what is abundantly clear is that the whisky is starting to develop an undoubted distillery character, fitting in perfectly next to the other more established peated monsters. It isn't medicinal, it isn't highly phenolic, but it has a wonderful balanced smoke and as a result, simply cannot be ignored. Keep 'em 'choman guys!!

KILCHOMAN DISTILLERY

Kilchoman Distillery

Kilchoman, (pronounced kilhoman) established in 2005, is a farm distillery and the first to be built on Islay in 124 years. It is one of only six distilleries to carry out traditional floor maltings (three of these are on Islay - Bowmore and Laphroaig are the others) on its own floor at the distillery.

But the key difference at Kilchoman is that the barley is grown on the farm at the distillery, whereas other distilleries purchase barley from around the country

Hello Fellow Scotch Lovers -

Two days left, and there are still a few gifts that need getting.

Option 1: Run around like a crazy person, bouncing off of other procrastinators in malls and stores, who like you are in a full-tilt tizzy from leaving their holiday shopping to the final hours.

Option 2: Sit back, relax, and with a few clicks of a mouse give the ScotchLover(s) in your life exactly what they want...and dont even break a sweat.

Not for nuthin', but #2 really sounds like my kinda shopping.

Go on...make it easy on yourself, and give one of the great gifts below.

I wish you all a most joyful Christmas and New Year!
