3233 Sage Canyon Rd About Brown Estate Vineyards In 1980, our parents acquired land in the hills east of Rutherford in the Napa Valley. We were farmers first, and farmers we remain. But in 1995 we decided on the strength of our fruit to make wine under our own label. Zinfandel came first (1996), then Cabernet Sauvignon (2000), then Chardonnay (2002). Then we branched out (ongoing).
In 2010 our family is celebrating thirty years in the Napa Valley and Brown Estate's fifteenth crush. Over the years our farming philosophy has not changed: Our fifty acres of vineyards are planted amidst 500 acres of roughneck wilderness that we strive to preserve - from the occasional inconvenient honeybee hive in the winery to the prickly star thistles in our vineyards that are a part of their ecosystem.
Our winemaking philosophy adheres to the principle of purity: We let the vineyard (and Mother Nature, of course) guide the way, and from what the harvest yields we seek to extract the purest expression of the exquisite fruit this land continues to give us.
