Fermentation Field Trip - Part 1

Bristol Brewing Interior

By Peter Doyle

Faced with a three-day Labor Day weekend, and an empty nest at home, the obvious decision was to finally go on one of the myriad brewery tours I've been planning for years. Armed with the Beer Drinker's Guide To Colorado brewery map, we plotted our course, researched the beers, and decided to do a Colorado Springs/Pueblo/Canon City/Salida/Buena Vista/Frisco/Dillon loop...

Rogue Santa's Private Reserve

by Rob Thamer

Christmas beers are generally pretty stellar in my opinion. Brewers boost the alcohol for warmth (yea right) and make a beer that tastes like nutbread. I'm serious, this is my thing. Any other time of the year, I drink IPAs like they are going out of style - but when the winter chill sets in, I want a beer that's brown, spicy, and has a good kick.

SanTan Brewing Canning Four Award Winners- Chandler, AZ

San Tan

by SanTan Brewing

The SanTan Brewing Company of Chandler announced that four of its award-winning craft beers - Devil's Ale, Hopshock IPA Epicenter Amber Ale, and HefeWeizen Wheat - are now being canned at its newly expanded Historic Downtown Chandler location. The new cans are available year-round in 6-packs at select retail locations serviced by Crescent Crown Distributing. The four brews are available in Arizona at a typical retail price of $8.99 to $9.99 per 6-pack, and distribution is expected to expand to other markets throughout the year.

This past summer, SanTan Brewing increased its brewing area by 3,700 square feet, installing seven 30-barrel fermentation tanks to increase capacity to more than 10,000 barrels annually, and adding a CASK Automatic Canning System Model 3.5, which is capable of producing thirty 12-ounce cans per minute.

SanTan Brewing Company has shifted its can supplier from a Colorado company to Rexam in Phoenix. Rexam is a global consumer packaging company. This is the first beer can that Rexam has produced at its Phoenix facility since the 1970s. Rexam provides a more "green" solution to the canning equation by cutting fuel and energy costs. Aluminum cans benefit the trend towards environmental compatibility, being an infinitely recyclable package. And by using Rexam, SanTan is keeping jobs local. Rexam employs roughly 110 people at its Phoenix plant.

SanTan's canned beer lineup includes:

SanTan Devil Can

Devil's Ale is a new breed of West Coast American Ales. Deep golden maroon in color, Devil's Ale is defined by as delicious citrus hop character derived from Cascade and Centennial hops grown in the Pacific Northwest and balanced firm caramel malt flavor.

SanTan HopShock Can

SanTan HopShock IPA (India Pale Ale) is a West Coast Ale with an intense bitterness derived from the distinct citrus/pine character of Pacific Northwest hops. A dry, crisp malt character and aggressive alcohol make this IPA a Hop-Heads passion.

SanTan Hefeweizen Can

SanTan Hefeweizen is a traditional German Wheat beer brewed with a very distinctive strain of wheat yeast that gives it an unmistakably strong Banana-clove flavor and aroma. Hefeweizen is an un-filtered beer which gives the recognizably hazy gold appearance.

SanTan Epicenter Can

Epicenter Amber Ale features a deep copper amber hue with a firm, toasted malt character, lightly sweet and a crisp dry finish. Epicenter has become a "gateway ale" for novice Craft Beer drinkers.

Brew Review: Shmaltz Brewing Hebrew RIPA - San Francisco, CA

Shmaltz Hebrew RIPA

by Rob Thamer

I really wanted to write about a Barley Wine, but for whatever reason that didn't happen.  I dig the Flying Dog offering, I LOVE Sierra Nevada's Bigfoot, and I went out looking for them.  What I came home with was Hebrew's R.I.P.A.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit that the packaging for this beer sold it.  I try not to get sucked in by the gambit of color that is any well-stocked craft beer cooler, but these guys did a great job on there labeling; plus, it's a 10% ABV double IPA made with rye - so its big, its hip, and totally interesting.  Straight to the check-out for me with a 4 pack.

This beer is a dark copper color, pours a great head, and has a hoppy sweet aroma.  The taste is massively malty, with a great hoppy finish.  If you haven't had a rye beer, this is a great one to try.  I've had a few ryes that I've wanted to toss after a few sips.  This one, however, is done perfectly.

I really don't have anything else to say.  This beer is everything that I love about big beers, and while pricey, is worth it.

Bohemian Brewery Canning Cherny Bock Schwarzbier - Midvale, UT

Bohemian Cherny Bock Schwarzbier

by Bohemian Brewery

Bohemian Brewery is proud to announce it's canning of Bohemian Brewery's Cherny Bock Schwarzbier.   Originally only available on draft, Cherny Bock Schwarzbier is the third lager to be canned by Bohemian Brewery. Along with Bohemian Brewery's Viennese Lager and Czech Pilsener, Cherny Bock Schwarzbier will add to the darker more rich aroma and taste spectrum of Bohemian's lager offering available in a can. The word 'Cherny' literally means 'black' in the Czech language referring to the color of this rather surprising dark Schwarzbier. With hints of coffee, chocolate and a gentle malt bitterness this traditional german style lager is a true gem to be discovered by all specialty beer lovers. With numerous awards under it's belt including a silver medal at the great american beer festival Cherny Bock Schwarzbier adds to the Bohemian Brewery portfolio of eco-friendly packaged craft beer.

Brew Return Alert: Blackened Voodoo by Dixie Brewing - New Orleans, LA

Dixie Brewing Blackened Voodoo

by The Editor

Blackened Voodoo is available nationwide in most markets and still

Recently, BrewClick.Com was introduced to Dixie Brewing Company via its Colorado distributor, Paulaner HP USA.  Dixie Brewing Company, established in New Orleans in 1907, was nearly wiped out during Hurricane Katrina with parts of the brewery under water and thousands of cases of beer destroyed. To make matters worse once the brewery had been dewatered the brewery fell victim to the looting that also took place in other parts of the city, most of the brewing equipment was stolen.  To continue operations the brewery moved production to Minhas Brewing in Monroe, Wisconsin.  They will at some point move operations back to the Original Dixie Brewery in New Orleans.

Sometimes, we open a new brew with high expectations and are met with disappointment.  Other times, we have lower expectations and are pleasantly surprised.  Happily, Blackened Voodoo fell into the latter category.

Blackened Voodoo is a dark amber colored lager based on German Dunkel with an ABV of 5.0% and balanced with Mt. Hood and Cascade Hops.  Dark roasted barley malts are used to create this darkly rich but very drinkable brew.  It shows a good head constructed of tiny, tight, and evenly distributed bubbles.  The malty aroma reveals itself slowly as the lager warms a bit.  On the palate, flavors of coriander, ginger, and bittersweet cocoa intermingle in a pleasant and tasteful manner.

Food wise, I think grilled burgers, ribs, and steak would pair well with Blackened Voodoo.  Bigger flavored meats, like beef, elk, buffalo, even ostrich medallions would be good with this beer.  With proper spicing and cooking, a talented chef might be able to make a hearty seafood like swordfish sing the praises of the bayou in honor of Blackened Voodoo.

Blackened Voodoo is available nationwide in most markets and still brewed in strict accordance to the recipes that made Dixie Beer popular.  The SRP for Dixie Blackened Voodoo is $8.49-$8.99.

Brew Review: Saison du Buff

Saison du Buff - Various

Stone, Dogfish Head, and Victory Saison du Buff

by Rob Thamer

Saison du Buff is quite an interesting beer, and not simply because it is loaded with herbal aromas and flavors, but because I didn't want to throw it against the wall after 5 sips.  As someone who has made my share of bad decisions when considering what and how much to throw into a batch beer,  I find it very impressive that this beer maintains its drinkability pretty well, if even for only a beer or two.

The first sniff is loaded with herbs.  Rosemary and Thyme are some seriously loaded plants in terms of smell, but its not offensive.  The first sip follows the smell.  An intriguing phenomenon happens after the palate acclimates however - the traditional saison characteristics become apparent (banana, floral notes), unveiling a pleasant, refreshing brew.

I would strongly suggest a rubbed pork tenderloin as a food pairing.  The common herbal flavors and saison + pork is a winner any way you look at it.  Give it a shot and let us know how it turns out.

Full Sail Brewing Releases Wassail - Hood River, OR

Full Sail Wassail Six Pack

By Full Sail Brewing

In Hood River, every year a few undeniable signs signal when winter is at the doorstep. The cool east winds begin to blow, Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams get a white blanket of fresh powder, and the snow report for the backcountry regains its trance-like hold. But most of all, we know it's winter because the Wassail starts flowing once again.

"Brewing Wassail is an annual tradition here at Full Sail. We have brewed Wassail every holiday season since 1988 and it's now as much a part of the festivities as sharing a roaring fire with our closest family and friends. It's no wonder this multi-medal winner is one of our favorite beers to brew. Choosing our ingredients for Wassail is like taking time to choose the perfect gift. Each year we carefully select the best hops and malts to brew this special beer. This year's Wassail is brewed with a range of caramel malts and dark chocolate malts giving it a deep mahogany color and a full malty body. We used a blend of Pacific Northwest hops for a pleasant hoppy aroma and finish creating a deliciously balanced beer that appeals to both hop and malt lovers alike. It's like our own little Christmas miracle," said Jamie Emmerson, Full Sail's Executive Brewmaster.

The Wassail packaging features a vintage postcard of the scenic Hood River Valley dusted with snow. In the spirit of tradition, a snow-covered douglas-fir tree looms in the foreground and Mt. Hood rises majestically in the background. Wassail makes the ideal gift for the beer enthusiasts in your life, and is the perfect accompaniment to the desserts and flavorful dishes that the holidays bring. Look for Wassail six packs at your favorite store, or on draught at your local restaurant or pub. Wassail will be widely available October through December. ABV 7% IBU 56.

In 2010 Wassail was awarded its sixth gold medal, and was rated "Exceptional" at the World Beer Championships (WBC) and was rated "Superb" by Wine Enthusiast. Wassail previously won a platinum medal and a "superlative" rating at the 2005 WBC, a gold medal at the 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006 and 2004 WBC, and three silver medals in 1999, 2000 and 2001.

In related news, and good news for those of you in the Northeast, Full Sail Brewing has just announced expanded distribution to additional markets in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire in partnership with L. Knife & Sons Company .

Brew Return Alert:  Leinenkugel's Big Eddy Russian Imperial Stout - Chippewa Falls, WI

Leinenkugel's Russian Imperial Stout 4 pk

by Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company

As craft beer lovers await the latest holiday offerings, Leinenkugel's is brewing a batch of Big Eddy Russian Imperial Stout. First brewed in 2007, the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company will release Big Eddy for a limited time beginning Nov. 1.

Big Eddy Russian Imperial Stout is brewed with 11 different malts including Munich, Carmel, Chocolate, classic Pale and Pale Ale, providing a rich, dry character, perfectly balancing Big Eddy's hoppy assertiveness. Warrior, Summit and Glacier hops create a bold tribute to the characteristic intensity of the flavor. The beer is reminiscent of the 18th century Russian Imperial Stout style that contained extra malts and hops to act as preservatives during long voyages from England to Russia, where it was served in the royal court.

Inspired by the Big Eddy Spring that has served as the lifeline of the Leinenkugel's brewery in Chippewa Falls, Wis. since 1867, Big Eddy Russian Imperial Stout provides a powerful, rich flavor experience that ages well. Big Eddy, which contains 9.5 percent alcohol by volume (ABV), demonstrates a deep mahogany hue and a complex, yet balanced, flavor, offering dark fruit, espresso and mocha character, and finishing with toffee and molasses notes.

"As the demand for full-bodied brews continues to grow, beer fans will find that the wait for Big Eddy's return was well worth it," said Jake Leinenkugel, fifth generation brewer and president of the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company. "This beer has tremendous spirit and depth and we're proud to share Big Eddy with beer drinkers."

Big Eddy Russian Imperial Stout will hit select markets in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, North Dakota, South Dakota and New Jersey, as well as Atlanta and Phoenix. The stout will be available in four-pack bottles and on draft for a limited time.

About Leinenkugel's
Leinenkugel's, brewed in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, since 1867, is the leading craft brewer in the upper Midwest. Year-round offerings include Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat, Honey Weiss, Berry Weiss, Leinie's Red, Creamy Dark, Original, Light, and Leinenkugel's Classic Amber Lager. In addition to Big Eddy Russian Imperial Stout, Leinenkugel's offers four limited-release seasonal beers, including summer favorite Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy, Oktoberfest, Fireside Nut Brown and 1888 Bock. 2nd Annual Ugly Sweater Pub Crawl - Aspen, CO

by Aspen Brewing Co.

To Our Loyal Beer Drinkers,

It's clearly off season in Aspen. The rich Texans have left, City Market is actually showing signs of their long promised upgrade (aisles that can fit more than one cart at a time would be nice) and there's more free shows at the Belly Up than paid shows. In celebration of these facts, we will be hosting our 2nd annual Ugly Sweater Pub Crawl this Saturday the 9th of October. I've called the nice old ladies at the thrift store and told them to dig out the nastiest Cosby impersonating, who shot the couch, and why am I so jealous articles of clothing they have stashed away in the thrift store catacombs. Meet us at the Brewery from 8-10PM for $3 pints (only if you're properly attired) and then we'll unleash a technicolored hell on places like Little Annies, Junk, Red Onion, and Sky Bar to name a few. Hope you all can join us as last year we had a ridiculous turnout and we're hoping for the same this go around.

Cheers!

Venetucci Pumpkin Ale - Colorado Springs, CO

Bristol Brewing Logo

by Bristol Brewing Co.

At this very moment, as you sit quietly at your desk, maturely containing your enthusiasm for Monday morning and adulthood, a 1st Grade class is happily wiggling and bouncing on the worn vinyl benches of a yellow school bus rumbling southward along Highway 87 toward Venetucci Farm. The 1st graders, we imagine, are probably not as good as you at self-restraint. After all, instead of emails and TPS reports to look forward to, they'll soon be digging in the worm pile, making compost and meeting the pigs and chickens. And at the end of the trip, their efforts will be rewarded handsomely with a free pumpkin. It's the modern day iteration of Nick Venetucci's

legacy.

In his day, Nick gave away maybe 50,000 pumpkins (on a single day!) every year for nearly 50 years to school kids who would pile out of armadas of school busses, pick a pumpkin, pile back on, and go home. These days, the passionate folks at Pikes Peak Community Foundation, along with the tireless dedication and expert knowledge of Susan and Patrick who run the farm, are preserving Nick's generosity and have added the fun and interactive education programs that are teaching kids that food comes from the earth, not a can or a cardboard box.

We love Nick's story and we love the work the farm is doing now. We'd like to help them expand their outreach, which is why we brew the Venetucci Pumpkin Ale, made with sweet, roasted Baby Pam pumpkins grown right there in harmony with the environment, and why we give back 100% of its profits. This is good for you, because after the TPS reports are done, you get to drink the velvety, rich and slightly spicy Venetucci Pumpkin Ale and feel good about supporting local agriculture.

Venetucci Pumpkin Ale will be tapped up at 5:00 pm, Tuesday, October 26th, but there are important changes in the way we're doing things this year, so pay attention. In the interest of fun and fairness, we will offer presales of the bomber bottles starting today at 1 pm. You must order in person and pay at the time you sign up, limit 6 bottles per person. Presold bottles will be available for pick up any time after noon on the 26th, but we'll guard them carefully for you up till December 31st if you prefer to come later and avoid the rush. Also this year, we will be selling pre-filled, new jugs only -- no refills, please! This will help you get through the line much faster. We've compiled an FAQ here, if you need more information.

Jester King to Use Rain Water for Brewing - Austin, TX

Jester King Logo

by Jester King Brewery

We are excited to announce that Jester King will begin harvesting rain water for use in its brewing process. We recently purchased 3,000 gallon rain water collection tanks from Tank Town in Dripping Springs, which is also home to Richard's Rain Water. We will use the roof of both the brewery and 8,000 square foot beer hall next door to catch an estimated 10,000 barrels of rain water per year for use in brewing. Prior to use, the rain water will go through ultraviolet and reverse osmosis purification.

Jester King Rainwater Tanks

We see using rain water for brewing at Jester King as part of a larger movement amongst craft breweries to return to our nation's pastime of local, sustainable beer and transition away from the aberrant era of centralized, mass-produced, industrial light lager.

New Brew Alert: Breckenridge Brewery Regal Pilsner in 6-packs

Breckenridge Brewery of Colorado, LLC releases Regal Pilsner in 6-packs of 12-oz bottles today.  Regal Pilsner has been available in very limited markets in draft form for two months, but today's availability of 6-packs will extend its reach to liquor stores and restaurants in additional geographies.  Regal Pilsner is a double pilsner that, while brewed similar to a traditional Bohemian pilsner, is produced with American Sterling and Magnum hops, giving the beer an American craft beer flair with a hoppy finish.  Brewery Director and Brewmaster, Todd Usry, says, "We chose Sterling hops for its floral aroma over the spiciness of Saaz hops traditionally used in pilsners.  The Magnum hops finish the beer with a clean mouthfeel."  At 7% ABV (alcohol by volume), Regal Pilsner is full, yet soft in traditional pilsner style.

Breckenridge Brewery launched its new "Occasionals" line of beers with the release of Regal Pilsner in draft.  These limited-release, small-batch beers are not tied to seasons and won't be available year-round like other beers in its portfolio.  The seasonal line-up of SummerBright, Autumn Ale, Christmas Ale, and Pandora's Bock will stay intact.

Breckenridge Brewery was founded in 1990 in Breckenridge, Colorado.  In the past two decades Breckenridge Brewery has grown from a small 3,000-barrels-a-year brewpub to one of the most successful craft beer companies in the nation. It now handcrafts nearly 30,000 barrels of fresh beer annually and owns and operates 4 pubs in the state of Colorado.

NEW BREW ALERT!  Stevens Point Brewery - Whole Hog Raspberry Saison

Stevens Point - WH Raspberry 4pk

BrewClick.Com recently tasted this latest brew in Stevens Point Brewery's Whole Hog Limited Release Brewmaster's Series.  Short version:  We loved it!

Brews - like wine and whiskeys - have specific technical characteristics that set them apart as well as make them identifiable (yeast strains, hops, barleys, brewing method, aging, etc.).  On a technical level, Stevens Point Brewery had this to say:

"Saison ales are a specialty of Wallonia, the French-speaking southern part of Belgium. Whole Hog Raspberry Saison is brewed in the Saison style, hand-crafted with a variety of barley malts, including 2-row, Pilsen, Munich and special roasted malts. The new brew, with an alcohol content of 7.2% by volume, also uses Cluster and Willamette hops, a special Belgian ale yeast perfect for

brewing Saison and a touch of natural raspberry flavor."

At BrewClick.Com, we are most interested in subjective descriptions:  Aroma, Taste, Color, Mouthfeel, Food Pairings, and so on.

In the glass, it displays a diffused, golden-orange color. The raspberry is very subtle on the nose, but hits first in the mouth, and hangs on.  It's wonderful!  Like a good scotch or wine, the flavors linger and change on the palate, letting you enjoy taking your time savoring it.  Moving from the raspberry to allspice and clove on the finish.  This brew was excellent with dark chocolate, and would pair with many desserts or serve as a nice after-meal drink.  Main-course-wise, we believe delicately flavored meats like pheasant, chicken, and pork would pair nicely, as would a fresh grilled burger. To the brewmaster's credit, we ran out of it before we got to cooking!  Lastly, this would be a great brew to have on a hot day, in the shade...  Cheers!

Liquid Owner/Solid Manager: Anita Gray

     Open:  11AM - Close

Located just off the Diagonal Highway at the Southern end of Longmont is Oskar Blues Home Made Liquids & Solids. Within minutes of Boulder, Lafayette, Louisville and Broomfield, Liquids & Solids has been shaking things up since opening in October, 2009. Designed with music in mind, this venue is already booking acts such as John Lee Hooker Jr. and Hazel Miller.

Driving up to Liquids & Solids you immediately notice the large silo painted up like a huge can of Dale's Pale Ale.  We dropped in recently and spoke with Owner/Manager, Anita Gray. She has been with Oskar Blues for 13 years, previously at the Lyons location. We learned that Liquid & Solids has been swamped since day one with a tremendous response from the surrounding area.  According to Anita, Oskar Blues wanted to add to the community with its own unique thing. They wanted to be something different from your ordinary chain. And different it is!

Liquids & Solids seats 75 and has 43 craft brews on tap. Mama's Little Yella Pils is their #1 seller. You will, of course, find 10-13 of Oskar Blue's own brews including Dale's Pale Ale, GUBNA, Old Chub, Gordon and Ten Fidy. You will also find an educated staff studying a new beer each week. With a nice long L-Shaped bar, this is possibly the best place in Colorado to do some serious tasting. Westword voted Liquid & Solids to have the "Best Beer List" in the State!

The menu is southern homestyle with plenty of great BBQ and other tempting dishes. We can personally vouch for the BBQ Brisket and the truly wonderful and attentive service we received. The whole atmosphere was fun, comfortable and friendly. Designed for an entertaining night out with a meal, a brew, live music and dancing.

Combining the two, Liquids & Solids recently hosted a beer pairing dinner with Left Hand Brewery. Not only was it a lot of fun, but it speaks to the camaraderie in the craft brewing community. Future beer pairings will be held on a quarterly basis.

As we left the dining and bar area, we headed upstairs to the music venue. This is a long, narrowish room with windows open to below. It has its own bar as well as numerous tables for seating. There is an area upfront for dancing that gets a lot of use. The sound system is excellent with a sound booth in the back. Colorado's own ChrisK alternates handling sound on the weekends!

Anita said that variety is key to the music scene there. They book anything from honkytonk and bluegrass to a little rock and roll.

When we visited, upcoming shows included Swamp Koolers, Catfish Kray Blues Band, Something Underground and Girls on Top.  In addition, they host a Blues Jam on Monday hosted by Erik Boa of Boa and the Constrictors. And on Sundays they have a bluegrass pick with Bonnie & Taylor Sims. In the summer, they will have more national touring acts. They will also have their huge patio open with the rock fountains, picnic tables and games.

Oskar Blues Liquids & Solids is a fun, comfortable environment for a night out on the town. It is a first rate music venue steeped in craft beer culture. They offer homemade southern cooking unlike anything at a chain. And they have that un-mistakable personality of Oskar Blues owner, Dale!

Germany - Feet on the Ground

Thamer - Germany Outdoor Pub

by Rob Thamer

It's impossible to understand German culture without understanding their beer.   With a legal drinking age of 16 for non-distilled beverages (i.e. beer), a legal system uninhibited by the remnants of Puritanism, and a brewing history many times older than the United States, our favorite malt beverage holds an appropriately high seat in the land of the Bratwurst.

After a beautifully exhausting trip through Germany, I have a new respect for German beer.  Don't get me wrong, I wasn't born yesterday; I know a quality beer when I see one.  However, I have always considered most of the Bavarian styles to be... boring frankly.  I'm not sure that impression has changed.  Like the Belgians, American microbrewers tend to do whatever they want when making beer; as an American, I respect that.  Conversely, the Reinheitsgebot, limits German brewers to a simple set of ingredients: water, hops, barley, and yeast.  This simplicity, however, proves to be an asset in creating great beer.

There are some well-known styles present in our everyday beer drinking.  I mean, who doesn't like a refreshing Hefeweizen in the summertime?  However, I'd like to mention a few German styles that don't get the attention they deserve.  In the past I have made a trip through the Munich and the surrounding areas and enjoyed a vast number of the well-known German styles, including the various types of Weizens, some Bocks, Dunkels, Helles, and Pilsners.  For this trip however, I focused more on regional styles I had never had (or at least never had in Germany).  Our first stop was Bamberg.

Thamer - Germany Rauchbier

Simply put, Rauchbier is a smoked version of a traditional style.  Brewing Rauchbier is a specialty of Bamberg.   One of the few towns spared from bombing in WWII (a fog caused allied forces to miss their target by 10 km or so), Bamberg is a beautiful town with great architecture and great beer.

Thamer - Germany Spezial Brau

Our arrival in Bamberg was quite early, after minimal sleep;  however, we went directly to a highly recommended brewery, Spezial Bräu.  An early morning Rauchbier is brutal, but only until you realize that it tastes like sausage.  On this particular morning we sampled the Marzen and the Lager.  Both were excellent, the Marzen especially, as it was very strongly smoked, yet balanced by the maltiness typical in that style.

Thamer - Germany Dinner

Later that evening we met up with a friend who introduced us to Schäufele at Aecht Schlenferla, which turned out to be a wonderfully barbequed pig shoulder.  And what better way to wash down bacon than with a bacon-like beverage?  Their Rauchbier was black, aromatic, and the smokiest beer in town.  Completely delicious, and absolutely filling.

From Bamberg, our next stop was Cologne.  The staple beer in Cologne is the Kölsch;  the name Cologne is anglicized - the actual name is Köln, thus Kölsch.  Kölsch is a refreshing ale, quite tasty, but a word of warning:  bottled Kölsch is in no way equivalent to the Kölsch on tap.

The best Kölsch in town that I had the pleasure of drinking was Päffgen.  Crisp and clean, Päffgen is an easy beer to drink.  Päffgen had a pleasant bitterness as well, moreso than the other Kölschs of the day: citrusy but not overstated.  In fact, the bitterness is far less than that of a Pilsner.  I think the key, though, is that the beer had flavor where others have been somewhat bland.  In all truth, the style itself is not one of my favorites.  I prefer more flavor in general, and the Kölsch has been accused of being a "woman's beer".  Make what you will of that (no offense intended), but its frankly quite light in flavor, and also served in 25 cl glasses.  Not a bad beer, but nothing to write about.  (I'm aware of the irony of this statement.)

Thamer - Germany Fuchschen Altbier

Our last stop in Germany was Düsseldorf, and the home of Altbier.  There is quite a rivalry between Düsseldorf and Cologne, and frankly these guys were the ones to impress upon me the negative image of the Kölsch.  That said, Altbier was quite good, and I can say that I'm on their side a bit.

In the course of a day, I consumed AT LEAST five different Altbiers on site at five different breweries.  Generally speaking, they were similiar:  roughly amber in color with some variations, malty, and moderately hopped.  The closest relative may be the Marzen, but the Marzen is quite a bit maltier.

My favorite Altbier was Füchschen, again because it had a pleasant bitterness, more than the others I tried, balanced, and flavorful.  I have heard there are several more hoppy versions floating around, but I did not have the pleasure.  After five breweries I was toast anyway.

My impression of German beer remains good following this trip.  Obviously we all have favorites and my impressions of what represents good beer was not changed.  I will say that everytime I drink beer in Germany I'm most impressed with the general quality of the product; whether or not one might consider the beer to be exciting or not, it is undeniable that the beer you consume in this part of the world carries decades and sometimes centuries of refinement.

As a person who loves to travel, I highly recommend experiencing beer in its "homeland".  German beer is best when fresh, like most lower alcohol beers, and on tap.  Regardless, there are many good German beers in the US.  Schlenkerla Rauchbier is available in the US.  In fact, their website has a list of retailers by state, here.  I can't think of a better Rauchbier to sample.

If you'd like to sample some Kölsch, Gaffel Kölsch is available here in the states.  It's not my favorite of the variety, and its pasteurized, but hey, its worth a shot.  As far as I can tell, no actual Altbiers make their way to the US.  Uerige Sticke Alt is the closest thing in the states, but since it's a "Sticke" it's a bit stronger and frankly it is its own style.  However, I'd suggest trying Victory's Kölsch and Altbier; they are quite good.

Whatever you decide to drink, support the craft brew industry, and cheers!

BrewClick.Com expects to enter a 4-week beta-test period on August 19, 2010.  "While the site will be fully functional for all to use, beta-testing gives us the opportunity to fine tune the application to meet the needs of the users." said Chris Toomer, Chief Architect and CIO for BrewClick.Com.

If you are an employer who wants more information on this new service, or would like to be an official beta-tester, please email us at LocalHops@BrewClick.Com.

Big Dog's Announces "3 Cheers for Charity" Program

Las Vegas, NV. · July 29, 2010 - Big Dog's Brewing Company is proud to announce its "Three Cheers for Charity" program that takes place each and every Thursday at each of Big Dog's three Las Vegas locations.  This innovative program is a partnership between Big Dog's and its Thursday guests.   Big Dog's provides each customer that buys a Big Dog's Brewing Company brew a wooden nickel.  The guest then takes their wooden nickel and places their vote in a special ballot box by each exit door.  Big Dog's features three worthwhile charities each month.  The guest places their nickel in the slot of the charity that they want Big Dog's Brewing Company to support.  Big Dog's donates a quarter for each ballot.  Guests are encouraged to "feel great by doing good while drinking well!"

The featured charities for the month of August are S.A.F.E. House, Nevada SPCA, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Beer Philosophy: Deconstruction

Odell Brewing Releases Barrel Aged Golden Ale

Odell Deconstruction Ale

Fort Collins, Colo. - On August 9, 2010, Odell Brewing will release the latest installment in its Single Serve Series of beers, Deconstruction Golden Ale.

"Drawing on inspiration from Jacque Derrida's theory of Deconstruction and the way it works to expose the intricacies of a text," said brewer Joe Mohrfeld, "we developed a process of brewing that first deconstructs the complexities desired in the finished product thereby revealing how to achieve these characteristics through the process of brewing."

Deconstruction Golden Ale, the result of this brewing process, was created by blending the final recipe with smaller pilot batches of the brew aged in oak, bourbon, and wine barrels and fermented with wild yeasts. Each brew contributes a unique flavor, derived from the wood chosen and the cultures resident, to achieve the subtle complexities desired.

Deconstruction Golden Ale starts sweet, delivering fruity esters reminiscent of peach, mango, and grapefruit. The sweetness is balanced by a mild spicy and slightly tart finish. The 10.5% ABV brew also boasts an earthy citrus hop aroma and a rich bronze color. Deconstruction is offered in 750 ml cork and cage finished bottles at a suggested retail price of $14.99. Only about 5000 bottles will available in the brewery's nine state distributor region.

Odell Brewing will celebrate the release of Deconstruction Golden Ale, with an uncorking party on Saturday, August 7th  from 4 - 6 p.m. in the brewery's tap room. Guests can enjoy live music and samples of the beer paired with a variety of pies made with locally grown fruit.
